Our History

KDC (named 'Kanowit Sea Dayak Local Authority then) was formed in the year 1949 and its office was located at Shop House No. 50 Kanowit Town better known as 'Bilik Tukang Kambuh' then.

In the year 1950, Council's office was moved to Kanowit Clinic's building which was where the Council's market stands nowadays. Then in the year 1957, the council got it's new name 'Kanowit District Council' under section 6 & 7, Council Negeri Election Ordinance (Cap. 7)

On 5 October 1967, Council's office was moved to the present site (Jalan Kubu, near Fort Emma) after the completion of its own office.

Initially the Council's Chairman was either appointed by the government or representative of the people elected through election. Since the year 1980, the district officer was appointed automatically to hold the post of Council's Chairman and the Secretary of the Council as the Chief Executive Office.
